HELP - who Is this Lafayette Warbington?

Author: Thelma Morgan Date: 30 Jun 2001

Surnames: Morgan, Jones, Ward, Piety, Waits

Classification: Military

"Lafayette Warbington, was a native of Georgia. He was on duty in convoying a train to Pecos, Texas, was stationed at Fort Lincoln in 1850, subsequently at Jefferson barracks, and again in Texas at Brownsville. He was aide-de-camp to General Twiggs, 1851-53, Mexican boundary commision, and in Utah expedition. When Georgia, seceded, he promply sent in his resignation January 1861, and then entering the military service of his State, was elected lieutenant colonel commanding the Augusta Vol. Battalion, a well equipped and admirably - disciplined body of fine infantry companies, with a battery attached. A few weeks later he resigned this position and became major of the First Reg Georgia Vol., one of the two which the State first undertook to organize. He assisted in the formation and instruction of this reg. as its acting command in the absence of its colonel. W T Walker, and lieutenant-colonel, Chastain, he was commissioned in 1861, lieutenant-colonel in the provisional army of the confederate state and assigned to the Tenth Ga. Reg. during the Maryland compaign he was detached from his regiment and assigned to the command of Willcox's brigade of Anderson's division. He regretted to part with the 10th Georgia, a splended reg, whose character is well described in his own words; "Illustrated on many a subsequent field of carnage, its record growing brighter and evr brighter as its members withered away in the livid flame of battle, it should pass into history with a role equaled by few, surpassed by none. To no one better than their first commander is known the fact that this glorious record is attribiutable to the innate characer of the men, who rushed forth singly, as it were, and at the first trumpet call to war, and as he followed their after career with tears and pride, it was ever a source of keen satisfaction that he had contributed in some part to their soldierly characater." Colonel Warbington commanded Wilcox's brigade most ably at Sharpesburg, and received a wound which disabled him for several weeks. While convalescent at his home in Ga., he was promoteed brigadair general 1862, Oct and on returning to duty was assigned to command of an Ala. Brigade stationed at Mobile where he remained until ordered to join the Army of Tenn., April 1863. Then he took command of several Ga., reg.

These gallant men had their first serious fighting at the battle of Bakers' Creek. The brigades of Lee, Barton and Warbington, though they twice rallied and fought with great gallantry, were broken and compelled to leave the field. His career was terminated in 1864. He engaged in farming awhile. Thelma Brooks Morgan"

Notes:

There was a Samuel Waits who served in the Confederacy from Louisiana. He was in Co. B, 1st Special Battlion (Wheat's), Louisiana Infantry. Went in as a Pvt, out as a Sergeant. Alternate spelling in his records: Samuel Wayts.

1st Special Battalion, Louisiana Infantry (Wheat's)

2nd Infantry Battalion [also called 1st Special Battalion or Wheat's Tigers] was formed at Camp Walker, near New Orleans, Louisiana, in May, 1861, with five companies. Most of the men were military adventurers who were experienced fighters. It moved to Virginia and saw action at First Manassas, then was assigned to R. Taylor's Brigade and fought in Jackson's Valley Campaign and later the Seven Days' Battles. During the summer of 1862 the battalion disbanded. Its commanders were Majors Robert A. Harris and Chatham R. Wheat.

Probably the same man. (I checked the names of Levi's brother, Bolin G. Waits', known sons---John & William---didn't find their names listed in a Lousiana Unit.)

"Manassas, First

Other Names: First Bull Run

Location: Fairfax County and Prince William County

Campaign: Manassas Campaign (July 1861)

Date(s): July 21, 1861

Principal Commanders: Brig. Gen. Irvin McDowell [US]; Brig. Gen. Joseph E. Johnston and Brig. Gen. P.G.T. Beauregard [CS]

Forces Engaged: 60,680 total (US 28,450; CS 32,230)

Estimated Casualties: 4,700 total (US 2,950; CS 1,750)

Description: This was the first major land battle of the armies in Virginia. On July 16, 1861, the untried Union army under Brig. Gen. Irvin McDowell marched from Washington against the Confederate army, which was drawn up behind Bull Run beyond Centreville. On the 21st, McDowell crossed at Sudley Ford and attacked the Confederate left flank on Matthews Hill. Fighting raged throughout the day as Confederate forces were driven back to Henry Hill. Late in the afternoon, Confederate reinforcements (one brigade arriving by rail from the Shenandoah Valley) extended and broke the Union right flank. The Federal retreat rapidly deteriorated into a rout. Although victorious, Confederate forces were too disorganized to pursue. Confederate Gen. Bee and Col. Bartow were killed. Thomas J. Jackson earned the nom de guerre "Stonewall." By July 22, the shattered Union army reached the safety of Washington. This battle convinced the Lincoln administration that the war would be a long and costly affair. McDowell was relieved of command of the Union army and replaced by Maj. Gen. George B. McClellan, who set about reorganizing and training the troops.

Result(s): Confederate victory

"Hello Virginia,

Good to hear from you.

I followed your lead on Samuel and found him on the 1870 and 1880 Fed. Census with wife Virginia Milstead and children, Mary, Martha, Francis, Emilie, Margaret and Alice. He died 13 July 1895. Also, Alice died on 1 Aug 1913. Emily died 18 Jun 1912. From my notes it appears Mary and/or Martha married David C. Rains.

I searched without luck for Levi in 1850. I believe you have it correct on the two Samuel's. The estate administrator of Jacob Gilmore's estate knew Levi was not in the area and had the advertisement posted.

So far, I have not been able to find anyone interested in Samuel. There must be a descendent out there somewhere.

Odd your email arriving today concerning Gilmore. I purchased a gravestone for the great grandson of Jacob Gilmore this morning.

I do appreciate your help. I chased after that Lauderdale Samuel for years thinking he may be the one. These things come slow and maybe someone will turn up.

Can you tell me anything more about the land sale in Lauderdale County? I am particularly interested in the name listed for his wife. We always had her listed as Elizabeth (not connection to the Elizabeth Waits of Lauderdale but it was convenient). Jacob hand another daughter by his second wife that he named Nancy in 1835. That would make him having two daughters with the same name and both alive. I expect the first was Nancy Elizabeth. The second, I can find only a marriage record indicating her name when she married Owen Sullivan.

I have actually visited the land where Jacob lived. Very nice people living there but they did not remember anyone knowing about Jacob Gilmore. I suppose they are dead and gone by now. Charles C."

"Thank you for the land deeds.

You are correct. I think the people knew what they were doing when they named Samuel Waits as the heir of Jacob Gilmore. Jacob had a nice estate to be divided. Not extremely large but it took years (1860 for one daughter) to receive her small share. Some court records for the estate are here in Cherokee County, Texas! A long way from Lauderdale County. Charles"

According to his daughter, Mellie Etta (Warbington) Hilton, Elmer and Liller married in Rayville, Louisiana. When they lived in Eudora, Arkansas, they were located on the Buff(?) River. He was the manager, or "rider" of a farm.

He purchased a new Model T Ford for $750 in 1923, but couldn't drive. When he tried, he was going downhill toward the river, and couldn't find the brakes. He kept pulling on the steering wheel, yelling "Stop this thing!" After that, he wouldn't try to drive. Mellie, who was a teenager then, learned how to drive, and did all the driving for him.

They lived at St. Jo, Louisiana before going to Crystal Springs, Mississippi. The Mississippi River flooded and folks had to leave. When they left St. Jo, it was by a Model T bus driven by Narsie G. Hilton. They left with only their clothes and went to Natchez, Mississippi to a refugee camp. Everything left behind was carted off by boat by whoever came along. Narsie's father took all the rescued cattle and sold them.

Elmer and family were living in Crystal Springs, Mississippi in 1927, where he and son, Clarence, worked for Mississippi Power & Light Company. They also did farming, trapping, and railrord work. Elmer made his own whiskey. He made it into "medicine" by adding herbs and cloroform to it, and sold it around the countryside.

After they returned to Eudora, Arkansas, Elmer and Clarence were trappers and traders in wild mink, fox, and raccoon. Once Elmer was scared by a dead wolf, caught in their traps.

"Brenda, I don't have much info on my Boswell line. My greatgrandmother, Horace Boswell Stodard, was the youngest of three children, born a few weeks after her father's death. Her father was Horace Boswell, and her mother was Cynthia Harper. Horace Boswell was the son of William Samuel Boswell and Stacy Warbington. I hope I have that correct. I have that info on a disk somewhere, but I've been unable to locate it since our last move. I do know my greatgrandmother's two brothers were Thomas and John. Horace A.

"CAHOON

Mrs. Meantha Cahoon died unexpectedly at the Robinson home Wednesday night. She was in her 95th year, and retained her vitality of both body and mind to a remarkable degree up to the time of her sudden death.

For the past twelve years she had made her home with her daughter, Mrs. Dayton Robinson, and her lovable, friendly nature had won her many friends.

She was a native of Sumter County, Alabama. The following children survive:

Mrs. Dayton Robinson, Grove Hill; Mrs. Lela Shrout, Mobile; Mrs. Annie Carter, Springville; Mrs. Pearl Means, Lisman; Jack of Gadsden; Tom of Lisman; Frank of Port Tobacco, Maryland.

My sister, Meantha Cahoon, was the oldest child of the family of A. E and S. M. Beavers of near Cuba, Alabama. By self-application, she earned a teacher’s certificate early in life. Her first school was a small school that stood near Mr. Gilead Baptist Church near our home. Dr. J. A. Beavers and all the boys and girls of school age in the community started in her first term of teaching. She instructed her pupils in godliness along with ordinary education. Surely hers was one of the sweetest and most Christlike lives ever lived in the world. We cherish her sweet memory.

Many years ago God called her to preach His word. She was faithful to her calling, was never discouraged, never complained of test or trials, loved the Word of God and no one loved good singing better that she.

Bro. Guy Hulett conducted a short graveside service. The two songs were beautiful. The song "He’ll Understand", and "Say, ‘Well Done’" was appropriate to her quiet Christian life and caused us all to feel as though we could hear Jesus say to her, "Well Done!"

After having been afflicted, and with the infirmities of age sorely pressing upon her, she pleaded with her dear ones, and everyone else, to prepare to meet their God. She praised God and sang the old-time hymns which she had sung for so many years. Had she lived until April 6, 1955, she would have been 95 years old.

The son-in-law and daughter, Mr. And Mrs. Dayton Robinson, in whose home she lived at Grove Hill, Ala. will have their reward for so tenderly taking care of her for the past years. All of her children and grandchildren loved her dearly, and were always helpful.

Pray for all.

[BROWN, HENSON, HINSON, JONES, LOPER, MCMULLEN, MCPHENN, WARBINGTON posted by Sandra Henson on 1 Dec 2000]

"Looking for information on Martha A. HINSON or HENSON of TALLAHATCHIE COUNTY. Family sources show that Mrs. Martha A. BROWN married Richard HINSON in 1860. We have been unable to locate Richard and Martha on the 1870 census with daughter, Mary. However, on the 1880 Census we located Martha A. listed as the wife of Rich HINSON. Mary J., 15, and Robt. M., 6, were listed as their children. In August of 1900, Martha A. HINSON completed a Civil War Widow's Benefits form and stated that her husband's name was Richard H. HINSON. She further stated that she was living in the W.M. WARBINGTON household and that he was no relation to her. W.M. Warbington and Mrs. Nannie HINSON had married in 1892. Martha was not listed in the William and Nannie WARBINGTON household in June - 1900 census. Martha had also stated on the form that she had three grandchildren as relations. There were 3 step-children listed in the WARBINGTON household. The death certificate of Mrs. Martha HENSON listed date of death as Feb 1915 and that she was widowed. Informant was M. McPHENN of Charleston. We need census information for Richard and Martha HINSON/HENSON in 1870 and for Martha HINSON/HENSON in 1900 and 1910. Also, we would appreciate any information on M.McPHENN to see if there is a connection to Martha. It appears there were several Martha A. HINSON/HENSONs in Tallahatchie County. A marriage record listed Mrs. Martha A. HINSON married W.B. LOPER in March 1901 with bond by H.J. JONES for W.B. LOPER. Ceremony performed by N.J. McMULLEN. Would appreciate any information that would help sort out these Martha A. HINSON/HENSONs. Thanks!"
